The March edition of Our State Magazine EATS section featured a three page article on Fried Chicken Champ Sand Hill Kitchen starting with a full page photo of our delicious Fried Chicken Sandwich. It was followed by a story of how Chef Jamie Wade has made SHK one of the favorite eateries in Asheville for heart breakfast dishes that will get your day off to a great start, and an even heartier lunch with multiple choices of sandwiches, salads, and sweets to carry you through the rest of the day. There is even a photo of a recipe card handwritten by Jamie's grandmother for banana pudding, which has always been a family favorite.  Operating out of a gas station kitchen located in the Candler/Enka area on the corner of Sand Hill and Sardis Roads, SHK has become a neighborhood favorite, managing to stay open throughout the pandemic thanks to the drive up window and the loyal support of customers from throughout the area. In the article, Chef Jamie  said “I wanted to be a part of this community. I feel very lucky that they support us the way that they do.”

Needless to say as a small independent restaurant, we at Sand Hill Kitchen have had our challenges over the past few months as all of our staff, like you, have been dealing with Covid-19.  We are happy to say that your support has helped us weather the storm and we are slowly working our way back toward being open full time. For now, you are keeping us busy when we are open by ordering take out and picking it up at our drive up window.  We have used this time to test some new entrees, and to ramp up our desserts since we have a talented baker on staff.

We look forward to the year ahead as life hopefully settles down a bit, and we have the time and energy to reflect on what we have experienced and lessons we have learned. Meanwhile, we will continue to provide you with good food made with love and wish the best to all of you, our loyal customers. And we offer this reminder to follow the 3 Ws, WAIT 6 feet apart, WEAR your mask, and WASH those hands often to help us all to safely recover from this pandemic!

    Chef/Owner Jamie Wade

Chef Jamie Wade brings over 25 years of varied culinary experiences to the recently opened Sand Hill Kitchen where the focus is on dishes made from scratch using fresh local ingredients to develop unique flavor combinations.

Jamie’s career began when she was a student majoring in photography at the University of Arizona and working  part time in local restaurants.  In 1993 she was hired by well known Tucson Chefs James Murphy and Jeff Azersky  to be part of their original staff when they opened Kingfisher Bar and Grill, a seafood restaurant which quickly became one of Tucson’s leading places to dine. They taught her well, so when she moved to New Orleans, LA
in 1996, she landed a job at Commander’s Palace, working under the tutelage of Chef Jamie Shannon for the following three years.  Next came stints in Annapolis and Baltimore, MD followed by the Blue Point Grill
in Duck, NC and other restaurants located on the Outer Banks prior to her move to “Foodtopia,” also known as Asheville. By working in outstanding restaurants in different regions of the country, she has developed a well rounded palate which is reflected in the dishes she prepares.

With the opening of Sand Hill Kitchen, Jamie is fulfilling a long time dream of having her own restaurant where she can serve “really good breakfasts and sandwiches” that make you want to come back for more.  Never expecting her first restaurant to be housed  in a gas station, she thinks it has been a good choice.  "We are  located at a hub in our community where friends and neighbors can easily come together in a convenient and relaxed atmosphere and enjoy a good meal," she says.  "My customers feel like family!"

In addition to serving out great meals at Sand Hill Kitchen, Jamie is skilled at catering events throughout the Asheville area.  Whether you need a platter of sandwiches for a working lunch, or a full dinner for a special occasion, give her a call and she will work with you to create a menu to meet your needs.

Jamie is also putting her photography skills to good use by adding mouth-watering photos of her daily specials             on the SHK Facebook and Instagram pages, so check them out.
